Like I said, I'm making a more-or-less active effort to put politics behind me. Today I think I've made a huge step in that direction, when I realized something about myself:
I'm still way, way more upset that FOX cancelled Firefly two years ago, than that John Kerry lost.
I'm still not entirely sure that the differences between a Kerry presidency and the current ridiculousity would have a direct impact on my life. But I do know, with every fiber of my fibrous being, that I've missed out on multiple seasons of genre-blending, Joss Whedon-written, fantastic programming. And that disturbs and saddens me to no end.
Sure, the world has its Arrested Developments and its Scrubses, but what of the Fireflies of yesteryear, hmm? What am I supposed to do -- reread Jewel Staite's blog over and over until Serenity comes out in freaking April?!?! I might be dead by April. Plus, I've read that there's no plan to re-create the series even if the movie does well. (The best we can hope for is another two movies. Bah!)
There are those who say most Americans are retarded for voting the way they did this year.* But if you ask me, the biggest mistake our citizenry makes is passing on quality television.
* Note how I deftly snuck in my own opinion by sourcing it to "those who say." I learned it from watching you, the press!
Well, thank god. I was beginning to worry about you Andrew. PAI GOW!!!
Can I make a request - can you or James give me some witty insightful background on this "Blade" movie with vampires and shit?? I saw it's a Marvel thing, so I figure you guys should know about it, and I'd like to pretend to have some other reason to go see it than simply because Jessica Biel is ridiculously hot.
Thanks,
An Adoring Fan
Blades kicks mucho ass. You must go watch!! Although you should watch the other 2 first. Not for plot reasons or anything. They're just cool.
I'm still unhappy with the Angel and Buffy both going away. Grrr...
And if I ever find out who cancelled Tru calling.. they're gonna get it!!
I must have Dushku at least once a week!
Liaps -- I loved Blade, but not the sequel so much.
Pup -- I'm not so upset about Buffy or Angel. Buffy probably should have ended earlier than it did, or at least should not have gone in the direction it did. I kept hoping it would turn out that Spike's effort to be re-souled was just a scam to get the chip out of his head so he could be the final Big Bad and kill Buffy, but that never happened. Bah!
And as for Angel, well, it had a good, long 5 year run. It never reached Buffy's peaks, but it also didn't reach Buffy's troughs. Mainly, though, it was on for FIVE FREAKIN' YEARS. That's over 100 episodes of vampiric fun, whereas I'll have to keep re-watching the same 13 episodes of Firefly, which I think had a lot more potential than Angel anyway.
Raise your hand if you had no idea there were 2 earlier ones. Any hot women in those?? If not, I might have to skip them.
I don't remember being too impressed by the ladies in either of the first Blades. Well, there was one kinda sexy chick in the first one, but she spent most of the film with blood all over her face. Mostly I just remember the violence.
The first scene in the first blade kicks major ass. Blood shower rave?! Can't beat that. I don't think you'll find the rest interesting though.
Yea, I agree with you there. You did get majorly jipped with only 13 shows.
Oh.. I like that idea with Spike thing. I didn't like the way Buffy ended, but I thought the way Angel ended was very cool.
It all went downhill without Dushku.
Hey Andrew, remember when you used to make fun of me circa 1998 because I said I liked Buffy? I believe you may have questioned my sexuality. Which is funny, because now your love for Joss Whedon has reached nearly pornographic levels.
But enough good-natured homophobic ribbing... all Joss fans should check out his new Astonishing X-Men comic. I usually never read X-comics, because, after all, who wants to read about filthy muties? But this one is very good, and has that great Joss-y dialogue and characterization. Think "Kitty Pryde-as-Buffy" and you've got a good idea what the series is like.
Oh I heard they were really good and about that whole Kitty = Buffy thing... must check it out..
Oh wait.. comics are evil. I think they're outlawed in this damn super conservative state I live in.
Pft. Firefly? I'd still do horrible things to get Freakazoid! back on the air. At least Firefly has a DVD. Me? I have to just fold in a corner asking myself if I want to go to the frogurt exposition.
